What is black mold?

Black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) is a microfungus that grows on organic, high-cellulose surfaces such as drywall, gypsum board, and some paper. It is usually dark, often black, and many people describe it as gelatinous. Because of its high moisture content it can look slimy, and as it dries it turns pale or powdery.

Where it comes from

Black mold takes hold wherever moisture sits, from severe water damage, leaks, unusual condensation, or flooding. Fix the moisture source and you cut off what feeds it.

Is black mold dangerous?

For most healthy adults black mold does not cause severe issues, but it can worsen respiratory problems, headaches, and fatigue. It is considered more dangerous for the very young, the elderly, and anyone with a condition that weakens the immune system.
